Monster Kites

skysail.jpg

So there is a buzz about kites pulling boats (ships) and saving energy… I LOVE technologies that are old fashioned and then make a big comeback (good example = steam engines). Questions – how do these things work when the wind in not in the right direction? They say they are computer controlled – what does the computer control? Why not sails which can give you a better angle? mrm

UPDATE:

The first Skysail has left Germany on a cargo ship headed to Venezuela.

Hybrid Dessicant Cooling Systems

Wow – Trane (soon to be IR) has a combo dessicant wheel/chiller system which seems to work backwards.  The device takes water from air just before it enters living space and dumps it back into air coming from outdoors.  I buy the concept – question is, why don’t we see this installed out there?  Money?  Performance? Maintenance?  Ignorance?   mrm

How did they do that???

Perhaps you have seen the video of the generator blowing up after being cyber-attacked which appeared on CNN. Cool video, but what was happening to get a generator to start smoking?  Is this something that could happen in real life?  mrm

High Pressure Hot Water – as a power system?

OK, so steam as a district heating medium is disappearing. Lots of good reasons.  One result is many systems are using high pressure hot water and often this hot water is heated from a waste heat source.  So, the question is, when you don’t need that high pressure hot water to heat things, how can you use it to make electricity?  mrm
